Page 3 of 5 Masking the lightAdd a layer mask to the current layer with the swirl. To do this, go to Layer > New Layer Mask > Reveal All. With the layer mask selected, use the Eraser tool to erase every other line intersecting the person or object so that the light looks like it is going around. Once you are done, you should get a 3D effect similar to the image below.
